The Sanskrit word mantra- (m. मन्त्रः, also n. मन्त्रं)consists of
the root man- "to think" (also in manas "mind") and the suffix -tra
meaning, tool, hence a literal translation would be "instrument of
thought".(1) The most popular source of mantras is from India - verses
from the Veda. These words are pronounced with intention and purpose
according to traditional methods. There are also mantras from the
religious and magick practice of Tantra, and these are used for both
good and evil purposes1.
There are five different types of mantras that can be used
Mantras that work by the principle of faith
Mantras that work by association
Mantras that work by agreement or covenant
Mantras that work by meaning
Mantras that work by their sound without reference to their meaning.
Mantras of Faith
The
first, most basic type of mantra, the mantra of faith. There is much
to be said about faith, as many times faith brings about results,
because through the energy of faith, the results are expected. It is
based on the same principle of prayer, in that the person "praying" has
immense faith in the being that they are praying to for results. Many
times a prayer like this is handed down through generations of
families. If it looses it's true meaning through time does not matter,
as people will continue to believe that it works. It works on the same
principles of the Power of Suggestion
The most familiar and
obvious satanic prayer of this kind are the words "Hail Satan".
Although this is often used as a simple greeting between Satanists,
when this "mantra" is used during a ritual, it becomes like a prayer
to the Dark Lord, and is used to unite the participants under one idea
and thought, the praise of Satan. It is the faith in this type of
prayer that produces results. The second type of faith is the faith of
the operator, the one repeating the words. By using a mantra to focus
the energy, you have effectively produced faith in yourself at your own
ability, which produces results. It is like a psychological chain
reaction.
Mantras of Association
Words
are labels, and the carry ideas and associations with them. For
instance, think of the word "ocean"..as you think of this word it might
bring to mind, the smell of sea salt, wetness, the roar of the waves.
Another example is the National Anthem, whose words are practically
meaningless in their context since they have been written, but when one
hears the "national Anthem" one is compelled to think of patriotism,
and the pride of belonging to their country. These words have their
corresponding images and feelings linked to them, and produce
associations with the use of the word.
Associations are not
instantaneous in their creation, unless they are within a context of
extreme incidence. For instance, when people hear the phrase
"nine-eleven" , most of us immediately see that image of the burning
twin towers in our mind. We can recall this moment in an instant by
hearing this word. This word, that was used to describe what happened,
is now an associated link with this event.
You can
create and recall associations in a controlled way, by linking a word or
name with an idea. You could concentrate and do a focused meditation
on your favorite demon or god, or any subject and thus, through
practice, their name will be associated with the things that you have
come to experience in your meditation. This is one of the main uses of a
gods name as a mantra, because of the associative powers that a name
contains.
Mantras of Agreement or Covenant
In
the olden days, performing certain parts of ritual and using certain
phrases builds upon spiritual energy. The energy is within the ritual's
workings- it is usually a ritual that has been passed down for
centuries, and the energy of this ritual has created the condition of
cause and effect. It is by faith that people believe that their ritual
words and prayers are causing this reaction.
To quote C.W.
Leadbetter.."As far as the man is concerned, they produce one of two
effects; either they strengthen his will to do that which he is trying
to do, or they impress upon him the absolute conviction that it will be
done. 2"
It is much like creating a groove (in the fabric
of reality) with spiritual energy, and whenever the ritual is
performed, the reaction occurs. Religious devotion that is sustained
through "religion" and "religious practice" will create an expectation
of results and fulfillment of the rituals purpose. This is especially
true with ritual words that have been used for hundreds of years by
priests. This is why and how ritual magick works.
Mantras that work by Meaning
This
type of mantra helps to create an association. These words are said
and repeated with confidence, many times until they are implanted upon
the subconscious. This is like self- programming by using a word,
phrase or idea to help strengthen your will.
By focusing on a
word or phrase you are able to concentrate on one idea or thought. The
Hindu, among other schools of thought, believe that practicing this
leads to the ability of being able to silence the mind at will. The
word "ohm", said over and over is an example of a type of mantra to
help focus the mind.
Another example of the
mantra of meaning is the "blessing" or consecration. This happens in
many different types of religious tradition. The two types of this is
the blessing one places upon them self, or the type of blessing that is
given by a priest. These blessings create a thought form which
attaches itself to the person who is blessed. The energy of this
thought form is dependent on the amount of energy that goes into
creating it.
This is similar to enchanting an object, talisman or
amulet for a specific purpose. This must be done with purposeful
intent, and the words must be spoken with meaning. If the blessing you
make for your object of desire is empty and meaningless, the effect
would be slight and purposeless. However, if the words spoken during
the time of blessing have the force of your will behind them, the
effect will be lasting.
Mantras that work by Sound
Mantras
used for their sound work by the principle of vibration. There is
vibration in all living and non-living things in this universe. This
type of mantra seeks to harmonize the speaker with vibrations. An
example of this is the Gregorian Chants. These monks have trained
themselves to use the perfect note and pitch, with a certain
inflection, to harmonize with the vibrations. These can be either sung,
or hummed.
Once again, CW Leadbetter, on the word AUM:
"That humming sound is a very powerful thing. Sometimes the three
letters A U M are sounded separately. Again, it may be taken on many
different notes, low or high, and sometimes it is sung upon several
notes in succession, in a sort of arpeggio. I have heard that according
to the Indian books there are supposed to be about one hundred and
seventy ways of pronouncing the Word, each with its different effect,
and it is thought to be the most powerful of all mantras."2
It
is often said in creation legends, how the earth was created with a
word. This is the powerful effect of the spoken word in it's purest
form, meant to harmonize and synthesize with the universe. It is the
expression of a deity in it's ultimate form. Eternal thought concealed
in the darkness comes forth as the creative word. The Christians have a
good example of this, with their "AMEN", which was originally an
Egyptian word meant to close a prayer.
These are some examples of
Mantras that I have used. In these, I have used the name of Satan, but
there are a myriad of other gods within this system that you could
choose. If you happen to find a particular mantra that helps you focus,
you can use that as a gateway into your mind and soul, for training
and experience on the path of Satanism.
